Nashville’s Culturally Rich Art Scene Offers More

Nashville has long been known for its expansive music scene, but it’s the talent and creativity found in the city’s art scene that is starting to make waves. Music City’s recent emergence of world-class fine arts and performing arts options is putting Nashville on the map as an artistic and culturally rich destination.

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts has become the anchor for the city’s rapidly expanding visual arts scene, with an exhibitions schedule that has new art flowing through the magnificent Art Deco building every 6 to 8 weeks. The expanding downtown art galleries host a First Saturday Art Crawl every month that brings over a thousand people through the galleries’ doors. Fisk University is the home to the Aaron Douglas and Carl Can Vechten galleries which include works by artists including Georgia O’Keeffe, Alfred Stieglitz, Pablo Picasso, Paul Cézanne, and more. Even the city’s art collection is housed in an exact replica of the Greek Parthenon built as part of Tennessee’s centennial celebration.

The History of Sugar in St. Bernard

St. Bernard Parish is sweetly nestled along the New Orleans Area Sugar Trail, which follows the most important crop in South Louisiana, sugarcane. Home to the largest sugar refinery in the world, Domino Sugar dates back to 1909. Generating over 7 million pounds of per day, this attraction highlights the sugar production process and the array of products that Domino manufactures.

Nearby is the home of the infamous Battle of New Orleans at the Chalmette Battlefield, part of the National Historic Park, where General Andrew Jackson led his troops to victory against the British. The sugar cane fields that once characterized these plantations provided an excellent field of fire for American artillery.

Continue down the San Bernardo National Scenic Byway and arrive at a Museum & Multi-Cultural Village celebrating the Isleños, Canary Islanders who settled in St Bernard Parish in the late 18th century and brought with them the tradition of sugar cane cultivation. Strolling through the gates of Sebastopol Plantation, a Creole plantation built in the 1830′s for the production of sugar cane, is like stepping back into an era of long ago. This trail is sure to hit the sweet spot as it emphasizes the growth and production of a regional culinary favorite, sugar! Visit www.visitstbernard.com for more information.

The Story Behind Creole Cuisine in New Orleans

New Orleans’ Creole fare reveals an enduring connection to the area’s diverse cultural heritage exposing more that just good meals.

Cajun cooking began in Acadia, near present day Nova Scotia. France colonized Acadia but the British gained control, forcing the Acadians to relocate. They settled in Louisiana where their name was translated into Cajun. Cajun cooking combines French and Southern influences and relies on pork fat and spices. They also mix Louisiana crawfish, crab, and shrimp with local spices like cayenne pepper. Creoles, descendants of rich Europeans that established New Orleans, mix French, Spanish, Caribbean, and African elements into their cooking style that is considered to be more refined and use butter, cream, and tomatoes.

The cuisine of New Orleans is anything but typical. Meals range from fine dining at old New Orleans establishments to fried meals at holein-the-wall favorites. One thing evident across the board is the combinations of seasoning. Another thing in common with many meals throughout New Orleans is the inclusion of seafood. The city’s rich history also plays a role in the “typical” cuisine of New Orleans. Some of the industry’s brightest and most innovative rising stars, serving their own unique versions of what is collectively known as New Orleans Fusion. Dine in some of the world’s oldest and best-known restaurants including Galatoire’s, Arnaud’s, Antoine’s and Brennan’s, or dine on beignets and café au lait at the famous Café Du Monde on Jackson Square.

While exploring New Orleans’ culinary wonders, don’t forget the surprising selection of other exotic cuisines, including exceptional Latin, Mediterranean and Asian variations that make their own delicious contributions to this gourmet’s paradise. Here, you’ll find famed classic French, Italian and Spanish restaurants that remain unceasingly faithful to their roots.

Some people eat to live, but New Orleanians live to eat. As a result, the city offers one of the most incredible – and incredibly diverse – concentrations of exceptional dining and unforgettable cuisine in the world. Go to www.neworleansinfo.com to learn more.

A little farther west are the Central Coast missions in Carmel and Santa Barbara where some of California’s early settlers laid the groundwork for the development of the state’s diverse economy. The arts and music have always had a stronghold in California, but they’re not limited to Hollywood and the major cities along the coast. A few miles inland, you can enjoy world-renowned musical and theatrical performances at venues like the Theater of Performing Arts in San Bernardino year-round. California is, and always will be, an incubator of sorts for cultural innovation; be it music, art, theater or film; the entire state is home to some pretty amazing cultural treasures that are easily accessible and just waiting for a new audience. California’s Wine List

With over 2,500 operating wineries in the state, California is the country’s largest wine producer and a mecca for oenophiles the world over. While the legend of full-bodied reds from Sonoma and Napa is well known to most, there are literally hundreds of wineries throughout the state doing fantastic work, just waiting to be found. Places like Mendocino on the North Coast and its growing reputation for fine organic wines, or Amador and El Dorado in the Gold Country with their venerable old vine Zins are definitely worth a visit. The finicky inland Pinots of the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara and the Mediterranean varietals in Temecula, just north of San Diego, should also make your “must-try” lists. Truth be told, any of these regions are great to visit anytime of year, but the planets truly align in September as California celebrates Wine Month all over the state with special events, tastings and releases of signature vintages. And finally, no foodie should miss the prestigious and delicious San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival, Nov 16-20. So all that remains now is planning the wine sojourn at visitcalifornia.com/culinary.

Year-Round Waves on California’s Beaches

Beaches and California are of course synonymous, but there’s more to this story than meets the SPF factor. California’s coast is a diverse ecosystem with endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. And those activities aren’t limited to aquatic endeavors. Along the coast you’ll find some of the most interesting places on Earth. Places like Venice Beach with its eclectic personas and well-muscled citizenry have to be seen in person to believe. There are several bucket list-worthy above the tree line national parks to choose from. Sure, everyone knows Yosemite is amazing, but not too far from there, are other gems in the national park system that don’t receive nearly the publicity, but are every bit as magical and grand: Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. Experience California; the Land of Dreaming Big and Doing Bigger

What is California about? Asking people on the street might prompt answers like this: “California is all about beaches, movie stars and perfect weather.” And this is true of course, but there’s so much more to the Golden State.

It’s a place of unimaginable abundance and an “anything’s possible” attitude. In fact, possibility is etched in California’s DNA, from the urban chic of San Francisco to the trend-setting novelties and culture-shifting curiosities so prevalent in Los Angeles, to the globally iconic attractions of Anaheim and San Diego. If that were the end of the story, it would be a pretty compelling tale for sure, but it’s not. The list of everything known about California (and dig) is about to grow exponentially. For instance, many already know about California’s superb wine regions and coastal majesty, but what about the active volcanoes? Speaking of mountains, California is home to Mt. Whitney: at 14,496 feet, it’s the tallest peak in the lower 48. There are Salton Seas, tar pits, golf courses, spas, redwood trees taller than office buildings and national parks the size of Midwestern states stretching from north to south and east to west. The possibilities in California can boggle the mind, or totally relax it. California’s not at all what many assume it to be. One thing’s for sure: finding out is going to be a blast.
